Reimagining the daily commute for a smarter, greener world
Urban commuting is one of the most inefficient systems in modern life. Every weekday morning, millions of people sit alone in cars on congested highways, burning fuel, releasing emissions, and losing hours of their day. GoPool was founded in 2023 with a simple but powerful premise: connecting people making the same journey creates enormous value for everyone involved.
We are not just a ridesharing app — we are a commuter platform purpose-built for the daily routine. By focusing exclusively on regular, recurring commutes rather than one-off trips, we create lasting connections between neighbors and colleagues who share the road every day.
Our AI-powered matching engine analyzes millions of trip patterns to find carpool partners with compatible routes, schedules, and preferences. The result: smarter commutes, genuine savings, and measurable environmental impact.
GoPool was born out of a real problem. Our CEO, Andrew O'Brien, spent three years commuting 45 miles each way between his home in the East Bay and a tech campus in San Francisco. The toll — financial, environmental, and personal — was significant. He calculated that he was spending over $9,000 per year on gas, tolls, and vehicle wear, and contributing roughly 6 metric tons of CO₂ annually just from commuting.
The frustrating part wasn't the cost — it was looking around the highway every morning and seeing that nearly every car held just one person. The capacity was there. The route overlap was obvious. What was missing was the technology to connect people reliably and efficiently.
Andrew teamed up with Emma Walsh, a product strategist with experience at Lyft and Waze, and David Kim, a machine learning engineer who had built routing optimization systems for logistics companies. Together, they spent 18 months building a matching algorithm that goes far beyond simple route overlap — accounting for schedule variability, personality compatibility scores, workplace verification, and dynamic pickup optimization.
GoPool launched its beta in the San Francisco Bay Area in early 2024. Within six months, it had attracted 12,000 active users and facilitated over 200,000 carpool trips. The platform's average match satisfaction rate of 94% validated the team's conviction that the right technology could turn carpooling from a logistical headache into a daily pleasure.
In February 2025, GoPool secured a $4.5 million seed round led by Sharp Alpha Advisors, enabling rapid expansion across North America. Today, the platform serves over 80,000 active commuters in 14 metropolitan areas, and that number is growing every week.
Every carpool trip removes a car from the road. GoPool users have collectively prevented over 12,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions — the equivalent of planting 580,000 trees. We report our environmental impact transparently and hold ourselves accountable to real, measurable sustainability goals.
GoPool is not a marketplace of strangers — it's a network of neighbors and colleagues. We design every feature with community trust in mind. From workplace verification to mutual review systems, we create the conditions for genuine, lasting commuter relationships.
Cutting-edge technology should solve real problems for real people. Our AI matching, carbon tracking, and automated payment systems exist to make commuting better — not to impress investors. We measure success in commuter satisfaction and emissions reduced, not in app store ratings.
Safety is not a feature — it is a foundation. Every GoPool user undergoes identity verification. Drivers complete background checks. Every trip is tracked in real time with emergency contact sharing. We will never compromise on user safety to accelerate growth.
We publish our environmental impact data quarterly. Our pricing algorithm is explained clearly to every user. Our matching criteria are documented and auditable. We believe that trust is built through transparency, and we design our systems to be as open as they are effective.
Car ownership and commuting costs fall disproportionately on lower-income workers. GoPool actively works to reduce these burdens. Our platform is free to use, and we partner with employers and transit agencies to ensure that the benefits of smart commuting are available to everyone.
